Alan Poul will serve as an executive producer on the cable news drama alongside Sorkin and Scott Rudin.

Six Feet Under's Alan Poul has joined Aaron Sorkin's cable news drama project at HBO.

The announcement comes as part of Poul's decision to sign an overall deal with the premium cable network. He will executive produce the pilot, along with Oscar winners Sorkin and Scott Rudin, and will direct episodes if the show gets picked up to series.

The highly anticipated project, tentatively titled More as the Story Develops, is set behind the scenes of a nightly cable news show, just as Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Sports Night were behind-the-scenes looks at a Saturday Night Live-type sketch comedy show and a SportsCenter-style sports news program, respectively. Sorkin spent time with high-profile cable newsmen, including Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, to better understand the world he planned to re-create.

Jeff Daniels has been tapped for the lead role of anchor Will McCallister, originally written as a 40-something. The project's remaining actors have yet to be cast.

Meantime, the pay cable outlet is readying for Sunday's launch of Game of Thrones, which has already become HBO's best-selling series abroad, fetching more than $2.5 million an episode. The series will become HBO's first show to have some episodes available via new streaming service HBO Go before they are televised as well.

Poul, whose recent TV credits include Showtime's The Big C, TNT's Perception and ABC pilot Good Christian Bitches, is repped by WME.
