Sky Deutschland to Show All HBO Series Day-And-Date With U.S.

German fans of 'Game of Thrones,' 'Veep' and 'Silicon Valley' will be able to view and stream new episodes parallel to their bow stateside.

When Game of Thrones kicks off its fifth season on HBO on April 12, German fans of the series will be watching — and legally.

Sky Deutschland, the German pay TV group controlled by BSkyB, will stream Game of Thrones in English on all its platforms day-and-date with the original U.S. broadcast.

Going forward, Sky Deutschland, which is HBO's exclusive pay TV partner in Germany and Austria, will screen new episodes of all HBO series parallel to their U.S. start. In addition to Game of Thrones, that includes the fourth season of Veep, the second season of Silicon Valley and, on April 30, the three-part miniseries Casual Vacancy, based on the novel by J.K. Rowling

Sky's day-and-date strategy for international series is a move to counteract online piracy. The company is taking a similar tack with acquired series such as Mad Men and Justified as well as shows produced by other divisions of Sky Europe, including Nordic crime series Fortitude and Italian mafia drama Gomorrah.
