Slime time for 'Pirates'

Empty

No time was wasted in getting the slime flowing Saturday at Nickelodeon's 2007 Kids' Choice Awards, where "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" was honored as favorite movie and Fox's "American Idol" as favorite TV show.

Host Justin Timberlake, who arrived onstage after soaring over the audience via the Nickelodeon blimp, kicked off the 20th anniversary edition of the awards show with a song-and-dance number about how "you'll never get a drop of slime on me," which, of course, ended with the singer getting slimed.

In fact, there was no shortage of slime at this year's awards show, telecast live from UCLA's Pauley Pavilion in Westwood. In addition to Timberlake, celebrities getting doused in the green goo during the event included Mandy Moore, Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker, Tobey Maguire, Steve Carell and Vince Vaughn, who joined Timberlake onstage for the final sliming of the night. After both stars were sufficiently doused, they turned the hoses on the audience, where any kids and stars who happened to have some of the best seats in the house received a slime shower.

And in what was billed as a world-record slime stunt, daredevil stuntman Ron Jones bungee-jumped from a height of 225 feet and plunged into a bucket of slime 12 feet in diameter and 5 feet deep.

Among all the sliming, there were several awards handed out -- all of which had been voted on by kids. Ben Stiller took home the Wannabe Award, presented to a celebrity role model whom kids most "want to be." Presenter Jack Black noted that Stiller won the honor by being "seriously funny," among other reasons, but in his acceptance speech, Stiller delivered a more serious message.

"When I was a kid, I wanted to be a lot of people and a lot of things -- an astronaut, an archaeologist, Spider-Man, Batman. ... But at the end of the day, the most important person you should want to be is yourself, because there is only one you," he said. "And if you believe in yourself, you can do anything you want to do. Anything is possible, just go for it."

Orlando Bloom accepted the orange Blimp award for "Pirates," while Nicole Kidman accepted the trophy for favorite animated movie for "Happy Feet." Kidman, after gamely hugging slimy presenters Carell and Maguire, said she was going to deliver the award to director George Miller, who lives in Australia, so that he could place it next to the film's Oscar.

"That shows you how important this is," she said.

Adam Sandler, named favorite movie actor for "Click," kept his remarks on the humorous side.

"I want to share (this award) with the people who put potato chips in bags. ... Without them, I'd be at the grocery store putting chips on my shirt," he said. "To the inventor of the pillow, thanks for all the naps."

Others walking away with Blimps included Dakota Fanning as favorite movie actress for "Charlotte's Web," Queen Latifah for favorite voice in an animated movie for "Ice Age: The Meltdown" and Black Eyed Peas for favorite group.

Meanwhile, Gwen Stefani performed her song "The Sweet Escape" with Akon, while Maroon5 treated the audience to a performance of their new single "Makes Me Wonder."

And of course, it wouldn't be a Kids' Choice Awards show without a burping contest. Two-time winner Timberlake this year took on the "20,000 kids" in the audience at Pauley Pavilion -- and lost. But he still walked away with the Blimp for favorite male singer.

"I feel like a grandpa up here," he said in accepting the award. "But this is awesome."
