Soccer boosts German pubweb ratings

But commercial RTL stays on top in first half

BERLIN -- The Euro 2008 soccer championships were a ratings bonanza for German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF.

For the first time in 16 years, commercial giant RTL was almost knocked off the top spot as market leader in the key 14-49 demographic.

But as with the German national team, which lost to Spain in the finals, German pubwebs couldn't quite manage an upset.

The month of June ended in a three-way tie with RTL, ZDF and ARD all claiming 13% of the 14-49 demographic. Among all viewers, ARD finished first, with an 18% share, followed by ZDF (17.6%) and RTL (11.6%).
