Sofia Coppola to Direct 'Little Mermaid' for Universal
Joe Wright had been attached to helm the live-action project that is being produced by Working Title.
Sofia Coppola is in negotiations to direct Universal's live-action adaptation of the classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid, THR has confirmed.
Joe Wright had been attached to helm the project that is being produced by Working Title. The project differs dramatically from previous films directed by Coppola, including Lost in Translation and most recently The Bling Ring, both of which are aimed at a highbrow adult audience.
The Little Mermaid, about the finned beauty who longs to walk on land, would be kid-friendly and appeal to a four-quadrant audience.
The tale, written by Hans Christian Andersen, marks the latest Disney animated classic to get live-action treatment at another studio. Warner Bros. is making a live-action version of The Jungle Book.
Coppola is repped by ICM and attorney Barry Hirsch.
