Solange Stars in First Michael Kors Street Style-Inspired Ad Campaign
The designer ditches the jet set for the street style set, turning NYC sidewalks into a runway to introduce his new MICHAEL Michael Kors Brooklyn grommet crossbody purse.
This fall sees artist, entrepreneur and style innovator Solange fronting the first-ever Michael Kors street style-inspired ad campaign with a series of imagery snapped by photographer Tommy Ton and a 43-second visual directed by Wednesday Agency.
The campaign, called The Walk and snapped on the streets of Manhattan's most scenic neighborhoods — including The West Village and Greenwich Village — features Solange sporting three distinct outfits from the designer’s fall ready-to-wear line. Along with trendy outfits — a faux fur green jacket paired with matching neck tie blouse, black leather culottes, and white sneakers — Solange showcases the new gray MICHAEL Michael Kors Brooklyn grommet crossbody purse.
Unlike Kors' previous campaigns capturing the jet set, this one puts the focus on the street style set. The move suggests a brand shift toward being more relatable and approachable for the younger generation.
"Solange is strong and passionate and not afraid to share her opinion with the world — and that type of confidence always makes an impact," Kors exclusively tells Billboard. "She’s a true trendsetter. I love how she takes some of our pieces and makes them her own."
The performer attended the designer's London dinner party in June, wearing a black blazer with a plunging neckline and silver metallic trousers that she pulled off with ease.
The interactive and shoppable campaign also showcases the individual style of three other personalities (Princess Olympia of Greece, and models Nina Agdal and Soo Joo Park), along with fans of the brand who can Tweet and Instagram photos using the hashtag #SidewalkSpotted for a chance to be featured online at The Walk’s platform.
Kors is the latest designer to make a heavy push for a new handbag design, timed so closely to New York Fashion Week. Tory Burch launched a global campaign Monday, focusing on its Gemini Link shoulder bag. Burch is planning to celebrate the bag during NYFW, too.
