'Sons of Anarchy's' Charlie Hunnam on 'Making Out' With Ron Perlman in '3,2,1...Frankie Go Boom' (Video)
“I don’t think anyone who watches 'Sons of Anarchy' ever anticipated that they’d see Clay Morrow and Jax Teller making out," the actor tells THR.
Charlie Hunnam, who stars as Jax Teller in the gritty motorcycle drama Sons of Anarchy, sheds his leather biker vest and bad-boy attitude to play Frankie, a young guy suffering from the demands of his insane parents and an older brother determined to accidentally ruin his life in upcoming comedy, 3,2,1...Frankie Go Boom.
Hunnam, 32, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he purposefully wanted to step out of the roles that he’s been playing.
“I’d just been doing a lot of the same thing, playing a lot of tough guys. Interesting roles, but they all felt kind of similar, and it just felt like I wanted to do something completely different,” he says.
In Jordan Roberts’ film, Hunnam plays Frankie, who has a failed one-night stand with a girl named Lassie (Lizzy Caplan). Frankie’s brother Bruce (Chris O’Dowd) films the entire night, and decides to put the video on the internet. Frankie and Bruce embark on a crazy journey to get the sex tape back after finding out that it’s fallen in the hands of Lassie’s father (Chris Noth).
An additional twist makes the film an even more shocking experience for fans of Sons of Anarchy -- Ron Perlman plays Phyllis, a post-op transgender woman in the farcical story.
Hunnam was cast first in the film, and then brought the script to Perlman, thinking that he would be interested in playing Lassie’s dad, the aging actor. Instead, Perlman had his eye on the role of Phyllis.
“He read it that night and called me back the next day and he said, ‘How did you know?’ and I said, ‘How did you know what?’ and he said, ‘That I’ve always wanted to play a woman,’” says Hunnam.
Hunnam calls Perlman’s performance “wacky,” adding, “I think it’s a special treat for Sons of Anarchy fans to see us in a very, very different situation.”
“I don’t think anyone who watches Sons of Anarchy ever anticipated that they’d see Clay Morrow and Jax Teller making out, which is what you have in store if you see this wonderful film,” he says.

3,2,1...Frankie Go Boom opens in theaters on October 12.
