Sony gives distribution execs the world
EmptySony Pictures Entertainment's domestic distribution czar Rory Bruer has been given reign over global film-releasing operations.
Bruer has been promoted to president of worldwide distribution in a move fulfilling SPE vice chairman Jeff Blake's vision of unifying global film releasing operations. Bruer will continue to report to Blake, who serves as chairman of worldwide marketing and distribution at SPE.
In a related move, international distribution president Mark Zucker was promoted to president of Sony Pictures Releasing International, the corporate entity overseeing foreign film distribution at the studio. Zucker will continue to manage Sony's day-to-day international film distribution, reporting to Bruer.
Bruer was named president of Sony Pictures Releasing in 2002. His 25 years with the studio include executive roles at Sony Pictures Releasing, Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures.
As part of many of his philanthropic endeavors, Bruer was named chairman of the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation in 2007; he previously served as the nonprofit's president.
Zucker was promoted from senior vp international distribution to president of international distribution in 2006. He has held various executive positions with Sony, Columbia and TriStar and earlier worked at MGM/United Artists and Paramount.
"Sony was among the first studios to globalize its marketing division, and I have long believed that by taking the next step and unifying our distribution operation under one roof worldwide, we could be even more efficient and productive," Blake said. "Our sales executives are the best in the industry. Rory and Mark have earned the trust and respect of filmmakers and exhibitors all over the world, and they have helped build Sony Pictures into a first-class distribution operation."
Bruer comes to his global role with an impressive track recording, having overseen 50 No. 1 domestic openings since 2002. The studio sits third in domestic market share for 2008, with its Will Smith starrer "Seven Pounds" set to bow Friday. (partialdiff)
