Sony Pictures Classics Takes Domestic Rights to 'Darling Companion'

Sony Pictures Classics has preemptively acquired all domestic rights to Lawrence Kasdan's ensemble pic Darling Companion from Werc Werk Works.

Sony Classics is planning a 2012 release for the film, which stars Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline, Dianne Wiest, Richard Jenkins, Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass, Ayelet Zurer and Sam Shepherd.

Kasdan co-wrote the script with Megan Kasdan. In the film, Keaton plays a woman struggling with empty nest syndrome who is married to a distracted, self-involved husband (Kline). Her only solace is a dog she finds on the side of the highway.

When her husband loses the dog during a wedding at the couple's vacation home in the Rockies, she enlists the guests in a massive search that sparks an adventure no one anticipated.

"The moment we heard Lawrence Kasdan was making an independent film we wanted to become involved. He and Meg Kasdan have written a seamless screenplay, full of rich characters played by some of America's finest actors. Darling Companion promises to be the kind of warm, engaging movie audiences are clamoring to see right now," Sony Classics said in announcing the acquisition.

Anthony Bregman of Likely Story produced the film with Kasdan and Werc Werk CEO Elizabeth Redleaf. Christine Walker, Meg Kasdan and John Kelly are executive producers.

The deal was negotiated by CAA on behalf of Werc Werk Works. CAA, which represents Kasdan and Kline, also arranged financing for the film. Sierra / Affinity is handling international sales.
