Sony Pictures PR Chief Exits

Charles Sipkins, a crisis-management specialist, joined Sony from the public relations firm of Sard Verbinnen & Co. in Sept., 2013

Charles Sipkins, Sony Pictures Entertainment's head of corporate communications, is stepping down from his position, which he has held for just over a year, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

"Charlie Sipkins has resigned to pursue other opportunities. We thank him for his contributions and wish him success in the future," Michael Lynton, Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO, said in an internal memo.

Sipkins, a crisis-management specialist, joined Sony from the public relations firm of Sard Verbinnen & Co. in Sept. 2013. As executive vp and chief communications officer, he reported to Lynton and SPE co-chairman Amy Pascal. At the time, the studio was coming off a summer that saw several high-profile disappointments at the box office, such as After Earth and White House Down, and was also being criticized by hedge fund manager Dan Loeb, who had charged that the studio's businesses were poorly managed.

With Sipkins' arrival, the studio began a shake-up of its publicity ranks. Steve Elzer, senior vp media relations, announced his plans to leave after 12 years at the studio, and Ann Boyd, executive vp global communications, followed in October of last year.
