Sony Promotes Two Business Affairs Executives
Gelena Weissman and Rey Cuerdo are responsible for overseeing the administration of Columbia's development and production deals.
Gelena Weissman has been promoted to vp, head of business affairs administration at Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Rey Cuerdo has been upped to vp, business affairs administration.
Cuerdo will report to Weissman, and Weissman will report to Andrew Gumpert, president, worldwide business affairs and operations, who announced the promotions Thursday.
In their new roles, Weissman, who joined Sony’s Columbia pictures in 2008, and Cuerdo, who began his career at Columbia in 1984, will oversee and manage the administration of all of Columbia’s movie development and production deals, as well as deals from Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.
Their responsibilities include overseeing underlying rights and talent options and paying above-the-line talent on all projects in development and production. In heading the department, Weissman assists in forecasting all development spending for the studio. Cuerdo will be setting up and heading new business affairs administration operations for SPWA.
“These two well-deserved promotions underscore the critical role that Gelena and Rey play in the studio’s business affairs. Once a deal has been negotiated, that’s really just the beginning – these executives are on the front lines, doing the hard work of maintaining, tracking, and managing the deals that make up the studio’s most important business relationships. They run a tight ship – it’s a real thrill to recognize their contributions,” Gumpert said.
