Boyhood's Richard Linklater won the Independent Spirit Award for the best director.

His star Ethan Hawke accepted the award for Linklater, who was absent.

"If this movie serves as anything, it serves as a little flair gun to shoot up for anyone who has a radical vision," Hawke said. "The impossible can happen. What Rick always says is it's the wild west out there. This art form is so young. There is so much to be done. There are so many stories to be told, and it's going to be told not by corporate America, but by you."

Linklater beat out fellow nominees Damien Chazelle, Ava DuVernay, Alejandro G. Iñárritu and David Zellner Kumiko to take home the honor.

The Independent Spirit Awards honors exclusively independent films, bringing together top Hollywood talent and independent filmmakers. Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell are co-hosting the 30th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, which is being broadcast live on IFC.
