'Star Wars' Sales in Canada Sees Premium Seats Go First
Fans snapped up tickets for Imax, UltraAVX, D-Box and VIP showings as leading Canadian exhibitor doubles screen count to meet demand.
Unprecedented demand for advance tickets has Canadian exhibition giant Cineplex Entertainment adding 50 percent more screens for the opening weekend of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Canadians especially felt the Force for premium tickets for Imax, UltraAVX, VIP Cinemas and D-Box screens, with those seats going first before all others during pre-sales.
Additionally, seven Cineplex multiplexes across the country will host "24 Hours of Star Wars," with screenings of the film scheduled around the clock at theaters in Vancouver and Richmond, British Columbia; Calgary; Edmonton; Toronto; Montreal; and Quebec City.
Cineplex also will host marathon events in five cities from 5 a.m. on Dec. 17, where all previous six Star Wars movies will screen back-to-back.
The Force Awakens will open across Canada on around 500 screens in 115 theaters this weekend.
That means a lot of snacks. Cineplex predicts Star Wars fans up North will consume over 5 million tubs of popcorn and nine million ounces of pop drinks over the opening frame.
