Starz Inks Catalog TV Deal With Canadian SVOD Service Shomi
The pact includes streaming rights to 'Da Vinci's Demons' and 'Black Sails'
Upstart Canadian SVOD service Shomi continues to build its anti-Netflix arsenal in Canada.
The joint venture between media giants Rogers Media and Shaw Media unveiled a catalog deal with Starz Digital Media on Friday that includes the streaming rights to past seasons of Da Vinci's Demons and Black Sails.
The Starz agreement follows a separate supply deal with 20th Century Fox Television Distribution that hands Shomi the SVOD rights to FX and FXX series such as American Horror Story and Sons of Anarchy. The supply deals also come as Shomi looks to keep the streaming rights to Starz series such as Power, The White Queen and Magic City away from Netflix Canada ahead of its own launch here in November.
"Shomi has created a supreme subscription on-demand service for consumers, and we're thrilled that we will be able to bring the exclusive streaming rights to many of our Starz originals and provide access to a deep library of lots of other animated and other licensed Starz content," Mara Winokur, senior vp digital at Starz, said in a statement.
Netflix, which launched in Canada in 2010, is set to compete with Shomi and yet another Canadian video portal planned from Bell Media as consumers here increasingly view film and TV series online. Shomi will launch initially for Rogers and Shaw cable and Internet subscribers at $8.99 a month.
