Stephen Colbert Doesn't Believe Donald Trump Is Tweeting to Relieve Pressure
"Is this really how we're going to treat the commander-in-chief? 'He likes it. It's fun. Let him play with the button; it calms him down.'"
Stephen Colbert took Donald Trump to task for tweeting so much as president-elect.
He mocked Trump for saying he's the only one who knows who will be in his cabinet, saying, "Only Trump the Magnificent knows who the finalists are — he's going to reveal the winners in a dramatic ceremony in the Rose Garden."
"I think for the president-elect to even be tweeting at all is just weird," said Colbert. He played a clip in which a member of Trump's transition team says Trump is dealing with immense pressure and perhaps finds Twitter relaxing.
"Is this really how we're going to treat the commander-in-chief? He likes it. It's fun. Let him play with the button; it calms him down," said Colbert, adding that he's going to "call bullshit" on that theory.
The Late Show host said Twitter isn't Trump's entertainment; it's his way around the press. He pointed out that Trump is not just ducking the press online. He's also evading them in the real world. Colbert explained that presidents and president-elects are supposed to have a protective press pool to document where the president is and what he is doing. Reporters need to be with the president in case "something catastrophic happens," said Colbert. "I'm sorry — in case something else catastrophic happens."
He then touched on the absurdity that the only reason the press confirmed Trump went out to a steak dinner is because a reporter made a reservation at the same restaurant and confirmed he was there. "Take this buzzer. Go to Barnes and Noble for a while," he said, addressing journalists, pretending they're waiting for a table at a restaurant. "It will vibrate when democracy is ready."
Colbert also talked about Jared Kushner's Game of Thrones-like connection to his father-in-law and asked how Trump would refer to Ted Cruz if Cruz becomes attorney general.
"Would President Trump call him Attorney General Lyin' Ted Cruz or is it Lyin' Attorney General Ted Cruz?" joked Colbert.
