He'll report to president of production Emma Watts.
Asbell most recently oversaw development and production on Ridley Scott's 2012 summer tentole Prometheus, as well as sleeper found-footage hit Chronicle, directed by Josh Trank and released earlier this year.
“It gives me great satisfaction to have watched Steve grow and succeed,” said Watts. "He's not only a talented executive but an exceptional colleague.”
Other films he has shepherded include The Day the Earth Stood Still, Gulliver’s Travels, The X Files: I Want to Believe and Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven.
Asbell joined Fox in 2002 as director of production. He was named vice president in 2004 and senior vice president in 2009.
He's currently overseeing production on The Wolverine, directed by James Mangold and set for a July 26, 2013 release. He's also working on a Chronicle sequel and Fantastic Four reboot, which Trank is developing to direct.
