Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg Support Wendy Greuel For L.A. Mayor

When it comes to local Los Angeles politics, most of high-level Hollywood traditionally takes a hands-off position, but the old school tie still counts—even in the entertainment industry.

Monday, City Controller and 2013 mayoral hopeful Wendy Greuel, a onetime DreamWorks SKG executive, made public a letter announcing that her campaign has secured the endorsement—and fund-raising support—of her former employers, Democratic heavyweights Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, David Geffen.

The DreamWorks troika notes in the letter—a copy of which was provided to The Hollywood Reporter—that Greuel “would bring to the job the same level of energy, insight and determination " she showed while working as an executive at DreamWorks SKG from 1997 to 2002.

According to the letter:  "If elected, Wendy would be the first woman to serve as Mayor of Los Angeles. . .While on the Los Angeles City Council, she received high marks for simplifying the City’s Business Tax Code, preserving the environment and open spaces, and was actually dubbed the 'Pothole Queen' for her tireless efforts on behalf of her constituents to fix our streets. . .As City Controller, Wendy has fought to fix our City’s long-term financial issues and is working to make agencies like the DWP more efficient and accountable to the public.”

Perhaps most significant, Spielberg, Katzenberg and Geffen invite others to join them “in supporting her campaign with the maximum (legally) allowable contribution of $1,000 per person.”

Hollywood’s deep pocket donors have long been a sort of Holy Grail for LA’s local politicians, though that money usually has remained tantalizingly out of reach, as the industry focuses its giving on national candidates and issues. If Greuel can use her DreamWorks connection to break through that indifference, it will be a considerable boost for her candidacy.
