'Straight Outta Compton' Named Top Film by African-American Film Critics Association
Ryan Coogler was named best director for 'Creed' while Spike Lee's 'Chi-Raq' also took several awards.
The African-American Film Critics Association revealed the winners of its AAFCA Awards, with Straight Outta Compton taking the top prize of best film of 2015.
The Universal movie about the rise of N.W.A also took prizes for Best Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor for Jason Mitchell, who played rapper Eazy E.
Ryan Coogler was awarded the best director prize for his work on Creed, which starred Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson (Jordan and Thompson also scooped up honors.)
AAFCA will hold its seventh annual awards ceremony at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016.
“Our members found an interesting theme in many of the films released this year, giving a voice to communities who have generally been underserved and marginalized in society,” says AAFCA president Gil Robertson.
The organization also released its list of top films of 2015, which included Mad Max: Fury Road, Beasts of No Nation and Spike Lee's Chi-Raq.
"With movies like Straight Outta Compton, Chi-Raq, 3 1/2 Minutes and Dope, filmmakers brought to life many storylines that are a reflection of what’s happening in our world today, including the #BlackLivesMatter movement," adds Robertson. "Pictures like Carol and The Danish Girl, give voice to another community that is too often ridiculed and ignored by the status-quo."
