'The Strain': FX Changing Controversial Billboards After Negative Reaction

Bowing to public pressure, FX Network is changing out the artwork on some of its billboards for the dark thriller The Strain.

The offending artwork shows a worm coming out of an eyeball, and it has received criticism on Twitter and elsewhere online.

"We are in the process of replacing the key art for The Strain on outdoor media in several locations," an FX spokesman said in a terse prepared statement.

The FX spokesman would not elaborate on how many billboards will be redone with new art work or how the network is deciding which to replace.

Among those who have been complaining is Kate Aurthur, a writer for BuzzFeed, who posted: "As a parent of small children — not to mention an adult human being who hates worms coming out of eyes — I'm surprised to see this image on public streets. I live in fear of my 4-year-old noticing it (he would cry, literally) and have taken to driving out of my way to avoid places where I know the billboard is. … And I am not alone!"

She then posted a series of tweets that shared her disgust with the artwork. One from screenwriter Kristin Smith reads: "Seriously, The Strain? I have to look at your disgusting eyeball billboard when I drive? Are you trying to make me crash and die?"

The Strain TV series, which premieres July 13, is based on a 2009 vampire horror novel by filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, who are also involved in the TV production.

Del Toro reportedly first wanted to make The Strain as a movie but was unable to get it financed. Instead, at the suggestion of his agent, he turned to TV.
