Strand acquires 'The Arbor'
Documentary centers on late playwright Andrea DunbarStrand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Clio Barnard's "The Arbor," a documentary about the late playwright Andrea Dunbar, from Wavelength Pictures. An April theatrical release is planned.
Dunbar, a British playwright best known for the autobiographical drama "Rita, Sue and Bob Too," died in 1990. Barnard's unconventional doc is built around interviews the filmmaker conducted with Dunbar's family, friends and neighbors, which are then recreated by actors.
Barnard was named best new documentary filmmaker at the Tribeca Film Fetival, where the film debuted.
The film was produced by Tracy O'Riordan for Artangel and UKFC and co-commissioned by Jerwood Charitable Foundation in association with Arts Council England and More4. The deal was handled by Strand's Jon Gerrans and Wavelength's John Flahive.
