His new shingle Grand Electric will acquire and produce feature films for the European and U.S. markets

France's StudioCanal has signed a multiyear partnership deal with Grand Electric, the new L.A.-based shingle set up by RoboCop producer Eric Newman.

Under the "co-venture," Grand Electric will work with StudioCanal to jointly acquire, develop and produce feature films for the European and U.S. markets. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

This follows a similar deal between StudioCanal and ex-Silver Pictures execs Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman to back their new production outfit The Picture Company.

Newman has had a professional relationship with StudioCanal since the French group came on board to finance and distribute Daniel Stamm's found-footage horror hit The Last Exorcism, which Newman produced through Strike Entertainment. Newman's deal with StudioCanal will see him focus on the genre fare he has made his trademark.

In addition to his film credits, which include Zack Synder's Dawn of the Dead, Andrew Niccol's In Time and Alfonso Cuaron's Oscar-nominated Children of Men, Newman is an executive producer of Netflix series Hemlock Grove and the upcoming drug drama Narcos. Both Hemlock Grove and Narcos are produced by French group Gaumont.

"I am extremely fortunate to be able to formalize what has been an incredibly important relationship to me," said Newman of the StudioCanal deal. "I look forward to being a part of the continuing expansion of StudioCanal as a stand-alone film-content provider."
