Style Notes: Smell Like a Smurf; 'Yo! MTV Raps' Returns
Six haute headlines to liven up your Monday night dinner conversation.
Yo! MTV Raps is back -- kind of. Streetwear brand Stussy is collaborating with the breakthrough '90s show for a new collection, slated to launch August 9. The brand leaked a teaser image on its Facebook page, featuring the two graphic logos above the upcoming debut date. We’re hoping to see pieces that both ignite nostalgia and pay homage to the show’s hosts Fab 5 Freddy, Doctor Dre and Ed Lover, as well as the countless careers it catapulted into the shaping hip hop genre. Dreamworks' big-screen animated feature Smurfs 2 may be singing the blues at the box office, but devout fans of the franchise can soon smell like the sequel. The studio behind the blue-hued crew is releasing Blue Style, a family-friendly fragrance line named after four characters and radiates pink pearl apple, melon and mandarin orange, and pink jasmine, angel white lilac and iris. The line also includes a more high-end “celebrity” fragrance called Smurfette Blue Magic, with a blend of floral and woodsy notes. “Smurfette is a big celebrity and we are doing a celebrity fragrance...She’s a fashionista, she deserves a fragrance,” says Antonio Lemma, chief executive officer of fragrance manufacturer First American Brands, Inc. The collection will be sold at Toys ‘R’ Us stores and online at smurffragrance.com – though the Aug. 9 in-store launch includes photo ops with costumed characters. [WWD]
Computer-generated characters aren't the only faces making fragrance news lately. Katie Holmes is expanding her makeup collection with cosmetics powerhouse Bobbi Brown -- a move that may include a signature scent in the future. "We all need a little help in smelling good, especially in the summer in New York City,” Holmes said of her interest to develop a fragrance. What does a wide-eyed actress-turned-Scientology villain-turned-future mom-ager to fashion-favorite Suri Cruise smell like? Until that’s decided, the Bobbi & Katie Collection debuts in September. Diane Von Furstenberg is getting a facelift of sorts – the designer has called on stylist Carine Roitfeld and photographer Sebastian Faena for her latest ad campaign, featuring model Daria Werbowy in the iconic DVF wrap dress. “This campaign, like the collection it represents, is really about getting back to our roots,” said von Furstenberg. “It is about empowering women to be the rock star and the muse of their own lives.” [Fashionista]
Victoria Beckham is reported to be polishing up the plans for her flagship store in Mayfair. The red-carpet favorite may be eyeing a Dover Street lease, alongside Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin and Alexander McQueen’s diffusion line McQ. (Regarding storefronts, it also seems a good week to be named Victoria in the UK, since lingerie line Victoria's Secret is expanding beyond London for the first time.) [Marie Claire UK]
And finally, the most popular accessory on the red carpet – that’s right, it’s Spanx shapewear – is launching a line called Star Power, inspired by celebrities on the red carpet in picture-perfect gowns. [WWD]
