Style: New Year, New Skin

The latest anti-aging skin-care products get down deep to deliver results.

Skin-care experts agree that no matter the cost or exclusivity of a brand, anti-aging products that just sit on top of the skin are pretty pointless. Bring on the latest eye creams and anti-wrinkle serums, which are specifically designed to get deep down into the cells. The beneficial ingredients include active vitamin A (look for retinol, retin-A or retinoids on the label) and vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid is the preferred form to help improve collagen production). Says Beverly Hills-based Dr. Zein Obagi, founder of ZO Skin Health, “You have to stimulate the skin to restore its vitality.” It’s also important, he adds, to cleanse and gently exfoliate the skin to rid it of dead cells before applying these antioxidant-rich anti-aging products. Another hot new development is QuSome technology, with products (like Colbert MD’s Nourish Eye Cream) that deliver fat- and water-soluble ingredients in alternating layers. Plus, there is a prolonged release of nutrients, allowing them to be fully absorbed over time to achieve the best possible results. Still, it’s important to keep expectations in check when using these so-called miracle creams. “Don’t think that you’ll ever be able to reverse aging overnight,” says Obagi, whose clients include Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli. “Try to be realistic and give any product a little time to see if the desired results happen.”
