WNBC Anchor Sue Simmons Gets Pink Slip, Contract Not Renewed
After 32 years with the New York City-based station, the evening news fixture is being shown the door, THR confirms.
WNBC-TV is saying goodbye to longtime anchor Sue Simmons.
The New York City station will not renew Simmons' contract when it ceases in June, spokesperson Dawn Rowan tells The Hollywood Reporter.
"We have tremendous respect and admiration for Sue Simmons. For decades, Sue has been a critical part of New York’s longest tenured anchor team in the city and has more than earned her iconic status," said a statement issued by Rowan. "We have been engaged in ongoing conversations with Sue about her transition from WNBC and will continue to work with her on plans to celebrate her many contributions to WNBC and the New York market."
WNBC-TV informed Simmons, an anchor there for the past 32 years, of its decision a year ago, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
Simmons has been with Channel 4 since 1980, and co-anchors the 11 p.m. news alongside Chuck Scarborough. She is a nightly fixture for New Yorkers but reached another level of fame in 2008 when she dropped the F-bomb on the air. Simmons and Scarborough are both 68; the latter's contract was also up in June but has been renewed for another three years, according to the Post. Rowan confirmed the status of Scarborough's contract.
Simmons has scaled back on the 6 p.m. broadcast since having back surgery in 2010.
