'Sully,' 'Hacksaw Ridge' Honored for Realistic Portrayal of Veterans (Exclusive)
National Veteran campaign Got Your 6 announced the newest slate of "6 Certified" projects — a program that was launched in early 2015 with the support of First Lady Michelle Obama.
Sully, Hacksaw Ridge and Marvel's Luke Cage are among the newest film, TV and theatrical projects honored for their positive portrayal of veterans as community leaders. The list of "6 Certified" projects was announced by veteran campaign organization Got Your 6 on Tuesday at the 2016 Storytellers event at the Television Academy's Saban Media Center in Los Angeles.
Got Your 6, which is the military term for "I got your back," aims to team with Hollywood to shift the perception of veterans in pop culture as well as help veterans to successfully reintegrate into civilian life. The "6 Certified" program launched in early 2015 with the support of First Lady Michelle Obama.
Got Your 6 has drawn the support of major Hollywood studios and industry notables, including J.J. Abrams, Tom Hanks, Tracy Morgan, Ron Meyer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alec Baldwin, Pharrell Williams and Ryan Phillippe.
"I've been a longtime supporter of Got Your 6, ever since attending the launch back in 2012, and I’m proud to hear that our portrayal of a U.S. veteran in USA Network's series Shooter was recognized for its accuracy by this amazing group. Like all characters in film or television, veterans should be written as well-rounded people, not as stereotypes, and I congratulate this next round of '6 Certified' projects for portraying veterans in empowering, sensitive lights,” said Phillippe in a statement.
The recognized projects are required to at least cast a veteran, tell a veteran's story, portray a veteran, credit a veteran as a writer, include a veteran on set or in the writers' room, or include research or consulting with a veteran, family member or subject matter expert. The list has expanded this year to include a theatrical production, Bandstand, which follows a musician who leads a group of veterans in a competition to become America's next swing band sensation.
The fourth list of certified projects were reviewed by a committee including producer Bruce Cohen (American Beauty/Silver Linings Playbook), creative development and worldwide production president Greg Silverman, HBO Programming executive vp, Amy Gravitt and Participant Media campaigns and programming director Seth Smith.
"When we launched ‘6 Certified’ back in early 2015 we were eager to recognize six projects,” said Charlie Ebersol, "6 Certifiied" committee member and chairman and founder of The Company. “The fact that we're sitting here not even two years later, and congratulating 13, really proves that we’re cultivating an understanding with writers, directors, and producers who are realizing they have an important duty and huge opportunity to create well-rounded veteran characters that will help shape public perception.”
The latest "6 Certified" projects join previous honorees including Modern Family, Jurassic World and Fargo. See the new list below.
