Sundance Film Fest Heading to Hong Kong for a New Film Series

Moviegoers in Hong Kong will get a firsthand taste of the Sundance Film Festival in September.

The Sundance Institute and The Metroplex, the newly opened multiplex in Hong Kong’s Kowloon Bay, announced today that they are joining forces to present Sundance Film Festival — Hong Kong Selects, which will screen eight films, accompanied by a delegation of filmmakers and Sundance festival brass, from Sept. 19-28.

The program is similar to other satellite events that Sundance, which takes place in January in Park City, Utah, now sponsors in London, along with AEG Europe and Los Angeles, where the Sundance Next Fest is scheduled to take place Aug. 7-10.

“In our effort to share the best of American independent film with audiences outside the U.S., Hong Kong seemed an excellent location with a rich cinematic history. In partnership with The Metroplex, we look forward to presenting a program of diverse and high-quality American independent films,” said Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper.

The lineup for the Hong Kong Selects program will be announced in mid-August, with ticket sales to begin later in the month. The screening series, which will span across two weekends from Sept. 19-28, is supported by the U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macau.

The Metroplex is a nine-screen, self-operated independent cinema belonging to Hopewell Holdings Limited.
