Netflix has nabbed the exclusive SVOD rights to Dee Rees' Southern drama Mudbound in the U.S.

With an ensemble cast that includes Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Mary J. Blige, Rob Morgan, Jason Mitchell, Jonathan Banks and Garrett Hedlund, Mudbound headed into this year's Sundance Film Festival as one of the most anticipated titles. Following its world premiere Saturday night, the auction heated up for the period drama that marks Rees' follow-up to her 2011 Sundance darling Pariah.

Set in the post-World War II South, Mudbound revolves around two men returning home from combat to work on a farm in rural Mississippi where they struggle to deal with racism and adjusting to life after war.

Rees directed from a screenplay she wrote with Virgil Williams, based on the acclaimed novel by Hillary Jordan.

Mudbound received a standing ovation at its world premiere at the Eccles Theater on Saturday night. Alongside her cast and crew, Rees told the audience, "Sometimes the war at home is bloodier than the war abroad."

Mudbound is a MACRO Media and Zeal production. The film is produced by Sally Jo Effenson, Cassian Elwes, Carl Effenson, Charles D. King, Kim Roth, Christopher Lemole, and Tim Zajaros. Dan Steinman, Teddy Schwarzman, Jennifer Roth, Poppy Hanks, Dee Rees, Kyle Tekiela, David Gendron, Ali Jazayeri and Virgil Williams serve as executive producers.

Elwes, King and WME negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.

The streamer also took exclusive, multi-territory SVOD rights in the UK, Canada, Japan, China, Korea, India and southeast Asia, as well as Eastern Europe, the UK, Italy, Benelux, South Africa, Iceland and Baltics.

Netflix has been on a documentary-buying binge at this year's fest, picking up Icarus, Chasing Coral and Casting JonBenet. The streamer also picked up Marti Noxon's To the Bone and is teaming with Momentum for Fun Mom Dinner
