Super Bowl Beauty: Katy Perry's Manicurist Speaks
You've seen the costumes, the makeup — and now, here's the detail to her digit dusters.
"This is the biggest event of my career," Katy Perry said of her Super Bowl halftime performance in this week’s issue of Billboard. So naturally, last night was also a touchstone moment for Kimmie Kyees, the L.A.-based nail technician who has been behind nearly every one of the pop star’s tricked-out designs (think: Obamanicure, yin-yangs and the football pedicure Perry 'grammed last week).
"I just kept thinking, 'This is probably going to be the most famous manicure of my entire career — 117 million people are going to be posting images that have a little bit of my work in it,' " Kyees told The Hollywood Reporter at the singer’s afterparty.
It was also among the most simple. To prevent the nails from competing with the four looks designed by Moschino’s Jeremy Scott, Perry selected Orly Star Spangled, a classic cherry red with only a hint of glitter from among the 350 shades of gel polish Kyees typically travels with.
The Ohio native, who says the entire weekend was "extremely relaxed," lacquered on the red on Saturday night while movies played in the home theater of the house Perry and her pals rented in Arizona. "There was just so much buildup and work that went into the whole thing," Kyees said before returning to the celebration. "As Katy was coming out onto the field a lot of us in the group stood there and cried from the sidelines."
