This Is How Katy Perry Got Her Perky Ponytail
The Super Bowl showstopper's hairstylist gives us the step by step.
"Katy specifically asked for the perkiest pony you’ve ever seen," says Clyde Haygood, the celebrity stylist responsible for the sleek and voluminous high ponytail Katy Perry sported, along with costumes by Jeremy Scott, for her upbeat Super Bowl halftime performance. Key to the 'do? Extra bounce, so Perry could helicopter it around per her choreography, of course.
Naturally the style was aided by plenty of additional hair. Haygood used a human hair Velcro ponytail with various lengths sewn inside and out to add volume, constructing a comfortable support system to attach it and help Perry handle the weight.
To give the singer’s hair a slick, mirror-like shine, the stylist used his go-to gel: KMS California Hairstay Styling Gel. As for the loose hair in the ponytail, Haygood separated it into five sections, which he sprayed with KMS California Freeshape 2-in-1 Styling + Finishing Spray before curling each with a two-inch iron to create an S-shaped wave.
Finally, he brushed out the curls to add bounce for the performance, and top-coated the pony with a bit of KMS California Hairplay Gel Wax to tame flyways and add support. Considering it survived the helicoptering, we’d consider it a touchdown.
