'Surrogates' takes lead overseas
Final numbers move 'Ugly Truth' to thirdBy exploiting a traditionally soft release period on the foreign circuit, Disney dominated weekend action for the second consecutive round with four titles generating more than $31 million, including No. 1-ranked "Surrogates," which grossed $11.8 million from 2,251 screens in 25 territories.
Preliminary boxoffice estimates released on Sunday put Sony's "The Ugly Truth" in the weekend's top spot with estimated boxoffice of $12.1 million. However, that figure was lowered to $11.4 million once final numbers were counted on Monday, making the romantic comedy the foreign circuit's No. 3 title.
"Surrogates," a sci-fi thriller starring Bruce Willis, finished first in eight of the markets it played, with new territories contributing $5 million to the weekend total. It remained No. 1 in Russia for the second consecutive weekend ($2.2 million from 625 sites for a cume of $8.9 million), was the top-ranked U.S. title in Korea ($2.5 million from 250 sites) and opened in first place in Mexico ($870,697 from 343 spots).
The international cume for "Surrogates" is $28.7 million; the worldwide tally is $55 million.
Pixar/Disney's "Up," which was the foreign circuit's No. 1 title for the previous two weekends, finished a close second this round, with $11.6 million generated from 3,579 locations in 27 territories, pushing its overseas cume to $231.2 million.
The animation title concluded a fifth straight weekend as the No. 1 film in Australia and set a record for a Pixar title in Denmark by grossing $1 million from 90 locations. Openings in the Benelux, Finland and the U.K. are due this weekend.
The "Ugly Truth" played 2,462 screens in 54 markets, hoisting its overseas total to $69.2 million. The biggest of the fresh territories for the Katherine Heigl-Gerard Butler costarrer was Germany, where the first-place opening weekend tally was $4.9 million from 501 sites, almost $500,000 less than the market tally reported Sunday.
No. 4 on the weekend was the French-language title "Le petit nicolas," which ruled the market in its France opener with an estimated $8.7 million from 571 screens. The Wild Bunch Distribution release directed by Laurent Tirard is a live-action film based on the popular children's book set in the 1950s and created by Rene Goscinny with illustrations by Sempe.
Fifth overall was the Weinstein Co./Universal's "Inglourious Basterds," with a gross of $8.4 million from 2,652 locations in 42 markets. The Quentin Tarantino World War II drama opened strong in Italy, with $2.5 million drawn from 323 screens. Its international cume stands at $141.6 million, with a worldwide tally of $258.6 million.
Universal opened the Ricky Gervais comedy "The Invention of Lying" in the U.K. and Ireland for $2.8 million from 368 screens, sufficient for a close No. 2 spot in the U.K.
Finishing first in the U.K. for the second straight weekend was Entertainment Film Distribution's release of Lakeshore Entertainment/MGM's musical update "Fame," which tallied $2.9 million from 460 locations for a market cume of $8.7 million.
In France, Warner Bros. opened director Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant!" starring Matt Damon in the No. 5 spot. The whistleblower comedy drew $911,600 from 255 screens.
Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" rained $6.8 million from 1,933 locations in 31 markets, pushing its overseas cume to $21.6 million. Openings in a half-dozen markets were highlighted by No. 1 bows in Colombia, Brazil and Peru.
Disney's "G-Force" muscled its way past the $100 million mark overseas ($100.8 million) on the back of a $5.7 million weekend at 2,221 sites in 36 markets. The sci-fi drama "District 9," being handled by Sony and other distributors, drew $4.9 million during the weekend and raised its cume to $63.8 million, $49.7 million of which was bagged in Sony territories.
"The Final Destination," being handled overseas by Warners and other distributors, registered $4.9 million from 2,035 screens in 43 markets, lifting its international total to $90.6 million. Sony's subway thriller "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" lifted its foreign take to $75.3 million thanks to a $3 million weekend at 1,953 screens in 41 markets.
Finishing as the top U.S. title in France for the second consecutive weekend was Disney's "The Proposal," starring Sandra Bullock, which generated $2.1 million overall from 1,206 locations in 34 markets for a foreign cume of $143.9 million. A No. 2 finish in France yielded $1.3 million from 324 sites.
Local-language product flourished in many markets around the world.
In Japan, Toho's manga-based action title "20th Century Boys -- Chapter 3" remained the No. 1 title and pushed its market cume to $45.3 million in just six rounds. The only American-related title to make the top five was Warner's fifth-ranked production of the French-language "Coco Avant Chanel," starring Audrey Tautou, which has accumulated total Japan boxoffice of $6 million over three frames.
The dominant title in Spain is local language "Rec 2," a horror thriller from co-directors Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza, which opened No. 1 in the market at 360 screens for $3.1 million. Also making its Spain debut was Woody Allen's comedy, "Whatever Works," which laughed all the way to a No. 6 ranking and $1.15 million from 195 situations.
Constantin/Film Verhleih's release of director Michael Herbig's family adventure film, "Wickie und die starken manner" finished the weekend No. 3 in Germany ($4.2 million from 748 sites) and No. 2 in Austria, hoisting its cume from the two markets to $34.8 million. "Wickie" also opened No. 3 in Spain to $1.6 million from 351 situations.
In Argentina, crime-thriller "El secreto de sus Ojos" (The Secret in Their Eyes), a Spain-Argentina co-production, remains in the top market spot and has total market boxoffice over eight rounds of $6.8 million.
In the Netherlands, Focus Features/Universal's "De Storm," a drama about a disastrous 1953 flood in the Dutch coastal provinces, finished No. 1 for the third straight weekend and has realized a cume of nearly $3 million to date in the market and in Belgium.
At No. 3 in France was "L'affaire farewell," a Cold War thriller from director Christian Carion, which drew an estimated $1.2 million during its second round at 459 screens. No. 6 was the hit comedy "Neuilly sa matre" from TFM Distribution, which grabbed $880,238 from 462 sites for an eight-week cume of $19.9 million.
Other international cumes: Fox's "Jennifer's Body," $2.8 million (after $1.7 million on the weekend from 855 screens in eight territories); Universal's "Funny People," 15.8 million; Sony's "Julie & Julia," $9.3 million; Fox's "Aliens in the Attic," $30 million; Warners' "The Hangover," $184.4 million; Fox's "(500) Days of Summer," $11.8 million; Universal's "The Soloist," $3.2 million; Universal's "Public Enemies," $99 million; Paramount's "Imagine That," $5 million; Universal's "Land of the Lost," $18 million; Fox's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," $684 million; Focus Features/Universal's "9," $16.1 million; and Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," $194.5 million.
