Sweeney, Blank set for Vanguard nod

Showtime's Matthew Blank and Disney's Anne Sweeney have been named the 2008 recipients of the National Cable Telecommunications Assn.'s Vanguard Award for Distinguished Leadership.

Blank, chairman and CEO of Showtime Networks, and Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney-ABC Television Group, top the list of nine Vanguard winners who will be recognized at NCTA's Cable Show '08 for their contributions to the cable industry.

The award for distinguished leadership is presented each year to one man and one woman who "consistently have demonstrated the highest level of cable industry leadership."

The other winners are:

-- Young Leadership Award: Bret Perkins, vp government affairs at Comcast Cable.

-- Programmers Award: Kenneth Lowe, president and CEO of the E.W. Scripps.

-- Science & Technology Award: Paul Allen, chairman of Charter Communications and chairman of Vulcan.

-- Cable Operations Management Award: Steven Brookstein, executive vp operations at Bresnan Communications.

-- Government & Community Relations Award: Carol Melton, executive vp global public policy at Time Warner.

-- Marketing Award: Sam Howe, executive vp and chief marketing officer at Time Warner Cable.

-- Associates & Affiliates Award: Michael Pohl, president of global strategies at C-COR, a provider of VOD access and management platforms.

NCTA's 57th annual Convention & International Exposition takes place May 18-20 in New Orleans. The Vanguard Awards will be presented by Abbe Raven, chair of the NCTA Vanguard Awards Committee and president and CEO of A&E Networks, on May 20 during a reception and awards ceremony.
