Syfy Acquires CW Drama 'The Originals' for U.K.
LONDON – NBCUniversal's Syfy has secured the U.K. premiere rights for supernatural drama The Originals, which is set to debut in the U.S. on The CW in October.
The show, a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries, will come to Britain some time this fall via the network based on a deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution. It is Syfy U.K.'s biggest series acquisition since V a few years ago.
Financial details weren't disclosed.
The Originals focuses on the Mikaelson siblings, Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah, first seen in season two of The Vampire Diaries as the world's original vampires. The show sees them return to their former home in New Orleans where they become embroiled in a power struggle with others claiming the city. The series stars Joseph Morgan (The Vampire Diaries, Immortals), Daniel Gillies (The Vampire Diaries, Saving Hope), Claire Holt (The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars), Charles Michael Davis (The Game, Switched at Birth) and others.
Said Adam Collings, channel director of Syfy U.K.: "With such an established and successful heritage and U.S. network credentials, The Originals is our biggest acquisition since V in 2010. Its narrative is edgy and contemporary and has something for fans of The Vampire Diaries and new viewers to the franchise alike."
Jeffrey Schlesinger, president of Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution, said: "Syfy is the perfect home for The Originals, and we are certain not only will fans in the U.K. who have made The Vampire Diaries such an enormous hit embrace this new series, but new viewers will as well."
The Originals is from Bonanza Productions in association with My So-Called Company, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios. Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, Wasteland), Leslie Morgenstein (The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl) and Gina Girolamo (The Lying Game) are executive producers on the show.
