'Takeaway' format headed for China

HONG KONG -- U.K.-based Granada International has licensed its "Saturday Night Takeaway" game show format to Hunan Television in China, Granada managing director Nadine Nohr said in a statement Tuesday from Hong Kong.

The first Asian broadcaster to take on the popular British format, Hunan TV is the Chinese provincial satellite broadcaster whose "Super Girl Voice" was a runaway hit in China when it parroted "American Idol" starting in 2004.

The first of 13 homegrown episodes of its "Super 2008: Friday Night Takeaway" will air Friday to Hunan's nationwide audience, one of the biggest in China after China Central Television.

"Making local versions of a number of our wide range of entertainment shows is part of our strategy to develop our presence in the Chinese market," James Ross, Granada's Asia regional director, said in the statement.

The Chinese version of the show will include the popular game "Win the Break," in which contestants compete for prizes advertised during commercial breaks.

Hunan TV GM and president Ouyang Changlin that the show "will have massive appeal to audiences in China and across Asia."
