'Tattoo Nation' Doc Gets Release Date
Eric Schwartz's film, narrated by "Machete's" Danny Trejo, recounts the growth of Black and Grey tattoo art.
D&E Entertainment has set Oct. 18 as the nationwide release date for Eric Schwartz’s Tattoo Nation, a documentary about Black and Grey tattoo art.
The film is scheduled to play special theatrical screenings in more than 60 cities, following its world premiere in London on Sept. 29 and its Oct. 11 U.S. premiere at the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood.
Tattooed actor Danny Trejo, who recently starred starred in Machete, narrates the film, which recounts how Charlie Cartwright and Jack Rudy opened their first tattoo parlor, Goodtime Charlie’s, in the heart of East L.A.’s Chicano community in 1975. The movie includes original interviews include with Cartwright, Rudy and Freddy Negrete as well as other tattoo artists like Ed Hardy, Mister Cartoon, Mark Mahoney, Corey Miller and Kate Hellenbrand.
“I made up my mind that the story of the birth of this unique American art form should be told by those who lived it. Chicano Black and Grey tattoo is similar to blues music, a beautiful art form born from a marginalized segment of our society,” Schwartz said.
