Taylor Swift Trademarks "This Sick Beat" and "Party Like It's 1989"
"Shake it off" was already taken.
Think twice before scribbling "This Sick Beat" on a T-shirt in the future as you could be faced with a legal bill, one that might be difficult to shake it off, shake it off.
Vox, citing legal database Justia, reports that Taylor Swift's legal team has trademarked the phrase "this sick beat" as well as "party like it's 1989" and "cause we never go out of style," all lyrics from her multimillion selling album 1989.
Any use of those phrases, emblazoned on products or otherwise, will require permission from Team Swift, who seem intent on their girl getting all that she's owed for her creative output as her recent battle with Spotify showed.
And before you ask, no, "shake it off" isn't included on the list, as that trademark is already held by a diet company.
