UPDATED: "American Idol" and Justin Bieber follow with five nominations apiece; new categories including choice book and choice electronic dance music artist have been added.

The first wave of nominations has been announced for this year's Teen Choice Awards and leading the way with six is the CW hit The Vampire Diaries, which took home five surfboards during last year's edition.

Keeping in line with pop culture, Fox's American Idol and teen pop singer Justin Bieber follow with five nominations apiece. New categories, including choice book and choice electronic dance music (EDM) artist have also been added into the annual youth-skewing awards ceremony.

Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible 4 will battle against Sherlock Holmes, Taylor Lautner's Abduction, Act of Valor and George Lucas' Red Tails for the top honor in the action movie category. The coveted surfboard for sci-fi/fantasy film will be awarded to either Joss Whedon's box office juggernaut The Avengers, The Hunger Games, Snow White pic Mirror Mirror, Breaking Dawn or Wrath of the Titans.

STORY: 2011 Teen Choice Awards: Full List of Winners

Drama movie competition heats up between Drive, Oscar nominee The Help, tearjerkers The Lucky One and The Vow, and family pic We Bought a Zoo. Crowdpleaser 21 Jump Street, American Reunion, Crazy, Stupid, Love., The Muppets and new ensemble rom-com What to Expect When You’re Expecting all compete in the comedy movie field.

Like film, the television field covers a gamut of genres. Representing drama TV series are buzzy shows like Revenge and Pretty Little Liars, who will vie for the top prize with veterans like Bones, Gossip Girl and freshman series Touch. The fantasy/sci-fi TV series category boasts cult favorites Fringe and Supernatural, with popular shows True Blood, Once Upon a Time and Diaries.

Among the nominees for action TV series, the recently departed Chuck competes against axed CSI: Miami, Nikita, NCIS: LA and Hawaii Five-0. Comedy series nominees include Glee, New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory.

Catering to its social media-savvy audience, the choice Twit category spotlights some of the most popular users on Twitter: Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Fallon, Demi Lovato and Ryan Seacrest.

Beginning Friday, fans between the ages of 13-19 can vote once each day per category on the official Teen Choice Awards website.

Hosts, performers and presenters will be announced shortly. Last year, Theory's Kaley Cuoco hosted the event.

Bob Bain and Michael Burg executive produce, with Paul Flattery and Kelly Brock as producers. Greg Sills is supervising producer.
