Telemundo, Caracol ink multi-year deal
Colombian broadcaster produced 'Pedro El Escamoso'

MEXICO CITY -- NBC Universal's Telemundo has inked a multi-year output deal with Colombia's Caracol Television, giving the U.S. Spanish-language broadcaster exclusive access to programming from one of Latin America's top content producers.
Caracol has produced such hits as the telenovela "Pedro El Escamoso," the mafia-themed series "El Cartel de los Sapos" and the popular soap "Sin Tetas no hay Paraiso," which Telemundo adapted for the U.S. market.
Under the deal, Telemundo positions itself as Caracol's exclusive broadcaster for the U.S. market. A Telemundo spokesman said the agreement extends to online and cable TV opportunities. Caracol produces about 4,000 hours of content a year and has a library of more than 10,000 hours of programming.
"We believe that with this deal we will not only successfully program their content in our network, but will also develop great international projects," said Marcos Santana, president of Telemundo International.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The deal strengthens Telemundo's offerings as it goes head-to-head against market leader Univison. Under a programming pact, Univision leans heavily on Mexico's Televisa for the bulk of its primetime content.
