The Skin I Live In
Directed by Pedro Almodovar

A cinematic prankster and master of melodrama, Almodovar has made a strange film even by his standards. Skin is filled with his usual obsessions of betrayal, sexual identity and death, and its science fiction element borders on horror. Antonio Banderas plays a plastic surgeon researching the creation of a better, stronger skin that bends the boundaries of bioethics. He experiments on a young woman held prisoner in his highly secure compound. An intruder in a tiger costume, violent encounters and a flashback to introduce other characters send this film down a bizarre road as it delves into themes of identity and the soul. "Almodovar's embrace of his crazed characters is a tender one," THR critic Kirk Honeycutt wrote in Cannes, "full of passion and comic glee."

Tresspass
Directed by Joel Schumacher
(Millennium Entertainment)

Schumacher is not going for subtlety in this home-invasion thriller starring Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman. "If most of the film's torments and turnarounds are factory-issue," remarked THR's John DeFore in his review from Toronto, "there's enough guilty pleasure here to hold the attention of most viewers for whom Trespass sounds like fun, and a couple of quirky surprises delivered by Cage."

Father of Invention
Directed by Trent Cooper
(Anchor Bay)

Premiering nearly two years ago in Berlin, this comedy starring Kevin Spacey and Heather Graham is not one of the better films for either as writer-director Trent Cooper (Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector) encourages his cast to play too broadly and writes characters with too many cliches. At that festival, Honeycutt found that "the film manages eventually to achieve some emotional oomph, but getting to those points is a hard slog."
