ThinkFilm, Discovery ride with 'Taxi'

CANNES -- ThinkFilm and Discovery Communications have acquired North American rights to Alex Gibney's award-winning Iraq War documentary "Taxi to the Darkside."

ThinkFilm picked up theatrical and home video rights, and Discovery grabbed broadcast rights to the feature, which examines the U.S.' torture practices in Iraq, Afghanistan and at the Guantanamo Bay prison. "Darkside" won the best documentary feature award after its premiere at this month's Tribeca Film Festival.

ThinkFilm is eyeing a fall release and planning an Oscar push. Discovery Channel will air the film after its theatrical release. The deal marks one of the first purchases from the 2007 Tribeca fest slate.

The film was produced by Gibney, Eva Omer and Susannah Shipman. The exec producers are Don Glascoff, Robert Johnson, Sidney Blumenthal, Jedd Wider and Todd Wider. Writer-director Gibney's corporate expose "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" earned a 2006 Oscar nom for best docu feature.

ThinkFilm also partnered with Discovery to acquire North American rights to "In the Shadow of the Moon" in one of the biggest sales of January's Sundance Film Festival.

Cinetic Media, which repped the filmmakers in the sale, also represented another Iraq war docu produced by Gibney, Charles Ferguson's "No End in Sight."

ThinkFilm director of acquisitions Ben Stambler, head of U.S. theatrical Mark Urman and senior vp acquisitions and business affairs Randy Manis negotiated the theatrical and home video rights. Discovery manager of business affairs Valerie Wells, and vp business affairs Larry Gordon negotiated the broadcast rights.
