Frieda Pinto signs on for a gender-bending action film, Cary Fukunaga talks 'Beasts of No Nation' and Netflix and Amazon might save the fest's weak market.
The Hollywood Reporter's fourth and final Toronto Film Festival daily issue features a look at Toronto's weak market (and who can save it), a chat with Cary Fukunaga about making Beasts of No Nation, exclusive news of a gender-reassignment action flick and reviews of The Program, About Ray and Maggie's Plan.
All Quiet on the Toronto Front
With Toronto dealmaking off to a slow start, sellers are looking for a digital savior. Amazon and Netflix are said to be in the mix on a number of the most promising acquisition titles, from Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next to the controversial Aretha Franklin doc Amazing Grace —a dramatic departure from last year’s fest. "I’ve never seen it so quiet. There’s nothing to buy," said one indie distributor. "It’s not just Toronto. Cannes was quiet too."
In a festival noteworthy for a pair of high-profile transgender-themed movies, an action film with a gender-reassigned protagonist quietly is being packaged and shopped to buyers. Called Tomboy, the project, which The Solution is selling, has veteran action helmer Walter Hill attached to direct and Sigourney Weaver and Freida Pinto in various stages of negotiations to co-star. However, the project still lacks a headliner who will play a male hitman who becomes a woman against his will.
Battling for Beasts
Fukunaga fought to have the Idris Elba-starrer shot in Ghana, and, as a result, struggled with the challenges of shooting in a place with no film professionals and no infrastructure. Actors disappeared mid-shoot, local crewmembers demanded more money when they realized they had the upper hand, and, during the shoot, Fukunaga was forced to rewrite the third act to make it more manageable and budget-friendly. The director spoke to THR about the challenging production and how he calculated the amount of violence to include.
