TIFF: Omar Sy to Headline French Comedy 'Two Is a Family'
Clemence Poesy co-stars in the feature, from the producers of 'The Belier Family.'
French star Omar Sy has signed on to headline Two Is a Family, a new French-language comedy from the producers of last year's local box office smash The Belier Family. SND Groupe has picked up worldwide rights for the film and will be introducing it to buyers at TIFF.
Sy will play Samuel, a bachelor enjoying a carefree life on the French Riviera whose life is turned upside down when a former girlfriend turns up, hands him a baby girl she says is his, and takes off. Samuel travels to London to track the mother down, unsuccessfully, and resigns himself to the job of raising the child.
Clemence Poesy and Antoine Bertrand co-star in Two is a Family, which The Gilded Cage screenwriter Hugo Gelin will direct. Vendome Production and Mars Films are producing with shooting set to start later this month. Mars has rights to the film in France.
“When we read the script, we just pounced on it,” said Charlotte Boucon, head of international sales at SND. “Its both funny and touching, and it has a really unique perspective telling the story of a daughter and her father through the eyes of a single dad.”
Sy, who recently appeared in Jurassic World and X-Men: Days of Future Past, has been a significant box office draw in Europe since the mega-success of 2011 French comedy Intouchables, which grossed more than $425 million worldwide.
The Belier Family, which Vendrome and Mars co-produced, earned more than $55 million in France alone last year, making it the second-most successful title in the territory for 2014.
