TIFF: Penelope Cruz Drama 'ma ma' Lands at Oscilloscope
The Spanish-language film, which was also produced by Cruz, will make its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 15.
Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to the Penelope Cruz-starrer ma ma, the latest film from acclaimed Spanish helmer Julio Medem (Sex and Lucia).
The Spanish-language film, which was also produced by Cruz, will make its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 15 at the Elgin/Winter Garden Theatres Visa Screening Room. It will screen for press and industry on Sept. 13.
ma ma is a drama about life, death, romance and motherhood. Cruz stars as Magda, a woman whose strength, grace and unending capacity for love guide her through both tragedies and miracles alike. A chance encounter following a grim medical diagnosis connects her with Arturo (Luis Tosar), who is, himself, dealing with unspeakable loss. Together, they raise Magda’s son while grappling with the realities of their situations and ultimately rising above life’s trials to find joy.
“I am thrilled to have ma ma released in the U.S. Magda is a strong woman that when confronted with illness responds with unbelievable inner strength," Medem said. "I’m excited it will reach a U.S. audience because its message is international and Penelope’s acting really special.”
Added Cruz: "I'm thrilled to be working with Oscilloscope. This movie is so important to me and they are the perfect partner for the project."
O-Scope’s Dan Berger said, “ma ma is a deeply resonant film that is clearly the work of an auteur with a distinct and important voice. Julio’s vision, and Penelope’s incredible performance leap from the screen and we couldn’t be more excited to bring them to audiences.”
Medem also produced alongside Alvaro Longoria for Morena Films.
CAA, which represents Cruz, brokered the deal.
Seville International, eOne’s boutique sales outfit, is handling international sales. eOne is releasing the film in Spain and Canada.
