TIFF: SquareOne Takes Robert Redford's 'Truth' For Germany, Austria (Exclusive)
Written and directed by James Vanderbilt, the film centers on the Dan Rather news scandal of 2004.
SquareOne Entertainment has taken all German and Austrian rights for Truth, the drama from director James Vanderbilt on the Dan Rather media scandal.
The film stars Robert Redford as Rather and Cate Blanchett as his 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes. Mapes and Rather became embroiled in a scandal when Rather reported on the CBS investigative news show that George W. Bush had received special treatment while serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War.
Later, some of the documents on which the report was based were suspected of being forgeries, setting a media storm. Rather's reputation was seriously damaged and Mapes, an award-winning journalist, was forced to resign. The film is based on Mapes' book about the incident, Truth and Duty. Elisabeth Moss, Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace co-star.
“This is an American story but we think the themes – of the media reporting on the media, will have wide appeal, also in Germany,” said SquareOne boss Al Munteanu, who negotiated the deal with Glen Basner of FilmNation, who is handling international sales on the title. SquareOne plans to release Truth in Germany and Austria in the first quarter of 2016.
Truth will screen at TIFF on Saturday, Sept. 12.
