Tim Goodman's Top 10 TV Shows of 2014

THR's chief TV critic ranks the best television of the year, from FX's 'Fargo' to AMC's 'The Walking Dead'

Rounding out the year, TV critic Tim Goodman counts down the ten best broadcast, cable, and online television shows of 2014.

While AMC's The Walking Dead was recently crowned the most-tweeted show of the year according to Nielsen reports, the popular zombie drama ranks last, preceded by the year's most-pirated series, HBO's Game of Thrones, in ninth place.

Thrones, which reached a milestone in becoming HBO's most popular series to date with an average weekly viewership of 18.4 million, was beat out by crime series True Detective, also on the same cable network. With only a one season run, it comes in six ranks above the fantasy epic at No. 3 on Goodman's list. Memorable performances by series leads Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson solidified its position in the top five (in turn, it's questionable whether the show's second season, featuring an all new cast, will fare as well next year).

Netflix's original series Orange is the New Black claims the seventh spot for introducing a bold storyline its second season, more compelling and thought-provoking than that of the first season. Just above the comedy-drama, comedian Louis C.K.'s FX show Louie falls at No. 6. AMC's Mad Men, the longest running series on the list, fills the No. 4 position for the show's use of creative storytelling and well-crafted character developments season after season since its premiere in 2007.

FX is the cable network home to the year's top two television shows. The Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys-led mystery drama The Americans sits a No. 2, topped by the year's highest ranked show Fargo. Fargo's anthology format and creative direction, headed by creator and writer Noah Hawley, has secured its No. 1 spot as the best show of 2014.
