According to Sony Pictures India, Tintin's $1.46 million opening weekend take is also the highest for any Steven Spielberg film in the country.

NEW DELHI – According to figures released Monday by Mumbai-based Sony Pictures India, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn grossed about 73.5 million rupees ($1.46 million) over its opening weekend after the film released here Friday.
The earlier top grossing animated movie released in India was DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda 2 which collected Rupees 55 million rupees (about $ 1 million) over its opening weekend in May.

Tintin released with over 350 prints - a record-breaking number for an animated film according to SPE - in English and Hindi including 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D formats.
SPE added that Tintin's opening weekend take was also the highest for any Steven Spielberg film released here.

“Not only is the animated genre gaining ground amongst all age groups in India, but Tintin is unique in the sense that the franchise is enjoyed and appreciated by a very wide audience right from kids to adults who grew up on Tintin,” said SPE India MD Kercy Daruwala. “The film’s collections have increased day upon day and we expect to see the film sustain strongly based on excellent word of mouth.”

Tintin was up against some strong competition in much awaited Bollywood musical drama Rockstar (starring top actor Ranbir Kapoor) which had a strong opening weekend. Rockstar distributor Eros Entertainment claimed the film grossed 640 million rupees ($12.7 million) worldwide with the India gross at 530 million rupees.

SPE's next animated release will be Arthur Christmas on Dec. 9 in addition to upcoming titles The Pirates! in April 2012 and Hotel Transylvania in September 2012.
