Tokyo Intl' Film Festival Lineup Announced

TOKYO – The lineup for the 25th of the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) was announced on Thursday at the Roppongi Hills complex where the fest will run from Oct. 20 to 28.

TIFF's main competition will consist of 16 films, including productions from China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, South Africa and the United States.

The jury will be headed by Roger Corman, supported by Japan's 2009 best foreign language Oscar-winning director Yojiro Takita (Departures), British producer Luc Roeg (We Need to Talk about Kevin) and Italian filmmaker Emanuele Crialese.

An all-night screening of a selection of Corman’s films will be held during the fest, as will one of legendary Hong Kong producer Raymond Chow’s, who is to be honored by TIFF this year.

The festival has been raising its profile in recent years and chairman Tom Yoda noted in his opening remarks that film entries had nearly doubled since 2007, to reach 1,332 titles this year.

James Cameron, who executive produced joint opening film Circus du Soleil: Worlds Away appeared in a video message to the press conference, recalling that the world premiere of his Titanic opened the festival 15 years ago, while a pre-release screening of parts of Avatar was featured at TIFF 2009. 

A special presentation of Skyfall, the latest Bond film, will be held during the fest to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic British spy franchise.

This will be the fifth year of TIFF's Action for Earth ecology theme and the festival will once again raise money for the survivors of last March's disasters in the northeast of Japan.

The 9th edition of the TIFFCOM contents market will see it move from its usual Roppongi Hills home next to the festival, to the Grand Pacific Le Daiba in the Tokyo Bay area this year, with expanded floor area and screening facilities.
