Tom Cruise Tops Annual List of Highest-Paid Actors
With "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" his only release in 2011, the 50-year-old actor still has a nearly $40 million lead over his closest competition.
Katie Holmes' lawyers may be going through Forbes with a highlighter today. The magazine released its annual list of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, and Tom Cruise tops them all by a nearly $40 million margin.
Cruise's estimated haul between May 2011 and May 2012 was $76 million. A handsome figure by any measure, it looks even nicer considering tied runners-up Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Sandler pulled in just $37 million.
The news comes less than a week after Holmes' filing for divorce from her husband of five years. And though the couple very likely had a prenuptial agreement, Forbes points out that those rarely cover child support.
A large chunk of Cruise's big pay day is thanks to the biggest box office success of his long career. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol has earned nearly $700 million worldwide since its December release. Subsequent effort Rock of Ages has comparatively fizzled, pulling in just $47 million globally.

Following Cruise, DiCaprio and Sandler on the list are the still lucrative Dwayne Johnson, Ben Stiller, Sacha Baron Cohen, Johnny Depp and Will Smith -- all of whom pulled in more than $30 million.
Forbes previously announced list of the highest-paid actresses gave the salary crown to Kristen Stewart. The Twilight star raked in 34.5 million in the last year.
