Tom Wilkinson, Jason Ritter Join Indie 'Carrie Pilby' (Exclusive)
Hailee Steinfeld is starring in the YA adaptation.
Jason Ritter and Tom Wilkinson are joining the cast of Carrie Pilby, an indie YA adaptation starring Hailee Steinfeld.
Based on the coming-of-age novel by Caren Lissner, the film centers on Carrie (Steinfeld), a 19-year-old genius who has just graduated from Harvard and has no idea how to fit in or socialize in life outside college.
Susan Johnson will direct the indie, which also stars Eddie Izzard.
Wilkinson will play Mr. Pilby, Carrie's father, a widower who struggled to raise his extremely gifted daughter on his own. Ritter will play Matt, an engaged man who Carrie dates only to expose his infidelity to his fiancé.
Suzanne Farwell, a longtime producer of Nancy Meyers' films, originally found and fell in love with the book and is producing Carrie Pilby, which is aiming to shoot in September of this year. Susan Cartsonis will executive produce. Kara Holden wrote the script, with Dean Craig working on later drafts.
Lissner's popular book was first published in 2003 under Harlequin Enterprises' female-centric Red Dress Ink imprint, which was launched to focus on the growing "chick-lit" market that included books with a humorous edge like Bridget Jones' Diary. Carrie Pilby was also later re-released under the Harlequin Teen line, and has been published in Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, the U.K. and Indonesia.
Ritter recently appeared on HBO's hit series Girls, and was a star of NBC's popular series Parenthood. On the film side, he he's worked on many indie projects in various stages, including horror project The Labyrinth and sci-fi film Embers. He's repped by ICM Partners and the Burstein Company.
Wilkinson's recent projects include Selma and Unfinished Business. He’s currently filming Oliver Stone’s Snowden with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He's repped by Lou Coulson Associates in the U.K. and Principal Entertainment LA.
