Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Not Attending Oscars (Report)
UPDATED: Due to heavy security, the crack-smoking politician won't be at Sunday's awards ceremony.
Toronto mayor Rob Ford may be in L.A., but he's not going to the Oscars, according to the Toronto Sun, a day after the paper reported him saying he would be making an appearance.
Following that story, Ford was shown arriving in Los Angeles, where he was greeted by Jimmy Kimmel, on whose show Ford is set to appear on Monday.
On Saturday, Ford -- whose admission to smoking crack cocaine, among other antics, has transformed him into international tabloid fodder -- told The Sun, "I am going to the Oscars. It's going to be fun," before reportedly boarding a Los Angeles-bound flight.
But on Sunday, councillor Doug Ford told The Sun that due to "heavy security," Ford would not be attending the Oscars or walking the red carpet beforehand. Instead, Ford would continue hanging out with Kimmel, Doug Ford said.
“This is kind of last minute. And even Jimmy had to go through a security check. If we would have done it two weeks ago, we could've done it. Jimmy holds the best Oscars party in town, I hear," he told the newspaper.
The Toronto mayor previously indicated he would be going to Kimmel's Oscars party, but it seems that's no longer on the agenda.
On Saturday evening, a rep for Jimmy Kimmel Live! released photos of the host picking up Ford from LAX, with the caption "Toronto Mayor Rob Ford had a special chauffeur at LAX this evening." The rep confirmed Ford will appear on the show Monday.
Kimmel's Sunday night post-Oscars show will be a star-studded affair, with Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres and nominees Tom Hanks, Martin Scorsese and Meryl Streep set to appear.
In recent months, Kimmel has staged a series of pranks -- from a viral "Twerk Fail" video to a fake Sochi Olympics clip -- that have fooled news outlets and garnered attention for the show. It's possible Ford's appearance is just the latest prank.
