Toronto: The Weinstein Co. Closes Deal on 'Can a Song Save Your Life?'
UPDATED: The company is in exclusive negotiations to pick up the film that stars Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo.
TORONTO -- The Weinstein Co. has closed in on a deal to acquire U.S. distribution rights to John Carney's Can a Song Save Your Life?
The film, which stars Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, debuted Saturday evening at the Toronto Film Festival to strong response from potential buyers, sparking a frenzied rush of distributors looking to add Can a Song to their slates.
After several bidders fell out, the Weinsteins entered into exclusive negotiations with UTA and CAA on the title (WME and Exclusive Media also are handling international territories).
There has been some speculation that The Weinstein Co. would release the film before the end of the year in order to get Oscar consideration, particularly for supporting actor Ruffalo. But a source says that the film will likely wait for 2014.
